Governor Wada Shuns Medical Treatment Abroad
Dec 30th 2012, 11:15

Kogi State Governor Idris Wada, who survived a ghastly auto accident on Friday afternoon along Lokoja-Ajaokuta road, will not be going abroad for medical treatment.

Wada was returning from his hometown of Ayingba where he had gone to attend the 2012 Igala Summit when the accident occurred. His aide–de-camp, Assistant Superintendent of Police Idris Mohammed, died in the crash while the driver Jibril Isah is still receiving treatment at the state Specialist Hospital, Lokoja, the state capital.

But the governor is at present at Cedar Crest Hospital, Amure-Omanze Street, Garki Area 2, Abuja where he was moved to from the Specialist hospital, Lokoja, where he first received treatment after the accident. Chief Medical Director of the hospital Dr. Felix Ogedengbe told journalists yesterday that the governor was transferred to the hospital at about 8 pm on Friday night.

He said Wada was in a stable condition, disclosing that the governor had agreed not to be treated abroad following medical advice from the hospital that his situation could be well managed by its medical experts.

Ogedengbe, an orthopaedic surgeon, confirmed that the governor sustained injuries and bone fractures on his thigh, which he said had been fixed.

He said Wada did not sustain any immediate life-threatening injury: “At about 8 pm Friday night, we received him in a condition that was very stable, there was no life threatening injury, his spirit is quite high, he is back on his feet and doing fine. When we told him that we could handle his condition here to a world class standard, he immediately agreed to have himself treated here.”

Ogedengbe, however, did not state specifically when the governor could be discharged from the hospital, saying treatment was on-going and that he had to be properly examined. “He had meals this morning and he is doing fine; the treatment is ongoing, he was involved in a major motor accident so he needs to be monitored,” he said.

The governor's thigh was operated upon and the operation is successful, says Wada's Special Adviser on Media and Strategy Jacob Edi. “The governor has undergone a successful surgical operation on his thigh at the hospital and it was successful,” he disclosed. Edi said Wada believes in the medical facility available in the country and would not be seeking medical help abroad. He also confirmed that the driver was alive and receiving treatment at the specialist hospital in Lokoja.

Among the top dignitaries that called on the governor at the hospital were Vice President Namadi Sambo, Secretary to the Government of Federation (SGF) Senator Anyim Pius Anyim and Taraba State Acting Governor Garba Umar.

The state Chairman of the Association of Local Government of Nigeria (ALGON) and Chairman of Olamaboro Local government, Mr. Farouk Adejoh-Audu, also visited the hospital around noon to see the governor. Security was tight as at the time THISDAY visited the hospital at 6.30 pm

Deputy Governor Awoniyi Sues for Calm Meanwhile, there is an uneasy calm in Lokoja following the Friday accident. Stern-looking, heavily armed mobile policemen are mounting sentry at the gate of the Lord Lugard complex, housing the state Government House.

The state Deputy Governor Yomi Awoniyi is at present in London on an official engagement. His Chief Press-Secretary Abu Micheal, who confirmed that Awoniyi had been away in the United Kingdom on official engagement before the accident, said he thanked God for the governor's survival.

Michael said in a statement that the deputy governor thanked those who had assisted the governor and the state over the auto crash. Awoniyi commiserated with the family of the late ADC to the governor who died in the crash, describing him as a fine gentleman and gallant officer whose services would be missed by the state government.

Awoniyi urged the people to remain calm, assuring them that very soon the governor would personally reach out to thank them for their prayers and show of concern.
