The Lagos Waste Management Authority has said plans have been concluded by to host this year’s edition of the Waste to Food programme on Saturday, August 17, 2013.
This was disclosed by the Managing Director, LAWMA, Mr. Ola Oresanya, who said that following the success of last year’s edition, the programme had been instituted as an annual event targeted at children of school age during the summer holidays.
Speaking on the objectives of the programme, the LAWMA boss said the programme was to inculcate in the young ones the habit of recycling waste and cleaning the environment.
According to him, it is also to keep school children gainfully engaged during the summer holidays and to ensure that the organisation’s zero tolerance to waste mismanagement in the state is executed to the letter.
The 2013 event is designed in such a way to ensure that the pupils are rewarded with gift vouchers for recyclables collected by them which are redeemable at designated points.
The organisation, in collaboration with its partners, had said last year during the inauguration of the programme that it was encouraging pupils to join its waste removal, recycling and reuse advocacy by offering them food to help clean the environment.
For any pupil who is able to bring a kilogramme of recyclable waste to LAWMA, the agency will give a voucher that will entitle the pupil to enjoy a meal at the outlets of a popular fast food outfit in the state.
The project is to ensure the total cleanliness of the state and inculcate healthy habits in the young ones.
It is expected that the recyclable materials, especially plastics, will be converted to polyester chips and fibres by a textile manufacturing company, which is collaborating with the agency to convert waste to wealth.
LAWMA also said it put adequate measures in place to effectively tackle the rise in waste generation due to numerous activities associated with the Eid-el-Fitri celebration.
