Ivory
Coast, Niger Republic and Ghana are among the international teams
expected to feature in the second edition of Chika Chukwumerije Sports
Foundation International Taekwondo Open,.
The two-day championship, holding in
Abuja on October 19 and 20, will feature teams from some African
countries and also from states in Nigeria.
No fewer than 17 athletes have been
registered by Ivory Coast, Niger and Ghana, while the organisers are
still expecting entries from Togo, Senegal, Mali, Congo DRC and Burkina
Faso.
Ivory Coast and Niger are among the top nations in Africa recognised globally by the World Taekwondo Federation.
According to the organisers, over 30
athletes are expected from neighbouring nations as the competition
continues to gain bigger status across the continent and globe.
So far, 14 states – Abia, Rivers,
Bauchi, Ondo, Edo, Oyo, Cross Rivers, Osun, Kogi, Plateau, Imo,
Nassarawa, Enugu and Bayelsa – have registered, while more states are
still expected to be part of the tournament.
The Federal University of Technology
Akure, University of Port Harcourt, Benue State University, the Nigeria
Security and Defence Corps and the Nigeria Police have also registered
their athletes.
The founder of CCSF, Chika Chukwumerije,
said the tournament would help Nigerian athletes to be at par with
their foreign counterparts, considering the experience of the athletes
and the quality of equipment at the championship.
