FIFA’s
decision on whether Peru and Ukraine will play their next home World
Cup qualifiers behind closed doors has been suspended.
Peru were forced to play their next home
qualifier against Bolivia on October 15 without spectators after match
officials reported “very serious incidents of improper conduct committed
by local fans” during their South American fixture with Uruguay in
September.
Ukraine were given the same punishment
for their European Group H qualifier against Poland following crowd
trouble in their game with San Marino in September.
Both the Peruvian Football Association
and the Football Federation of Ukraine appealed the decisions by FIFA’s
Disciplinary Committee, and the suspension of the rulings has now been
confirmed by the governing body.
“The respective appeals have been
granted suspensive effect until further notice due to the fact that the
FIFA Appeal Committee will not be able to take a decision on the main
issue early enough,” a FIFA statement read.
“The sanctions imposed by the FIFA
Disciplinary Committee are suspended and only once the FIFA Appeal
Committee has had an opportunity to decide on the appeals will FIFA
communicate further information on the two cases.”
Both countries have two games remaining
in their qualification campaigns for Brazil 2014, with Peru unable to
progress from their pool.
Ukraine currently sit joint second with Montenegro in their group, a point off leaders England.
