• 2 committees inaugurated
The Presidency yesterday inaugurated an 11- member committee to restructure the Goodluck Support Group (GSG), even though President Goodluck Jonathan was yet to formally declare his intention for a second term. General Ahmed Ibrahim is the chairman of the Special GSG Re-organisation Committee. It has 10 days to submit its recommendations.
Special Adviser to the President on Political Affairs, Professor Rufai Ahmed Alkali, who inaugurated the committee told newsmen that the decision was to re invigorate the platform ahead of 2015 general elections.
“ As 2015 approaches, we note that the circumstances and fundamentals facing us is somewhat different. The opposition is different; the political landscape is different, the players are different, and the issues are different.
“Therefore, to succeed in 2015, there is a great need to re-appraise our strategies and the structure of the umbrella organisation (GSG) that helped us to victory in 2011.
“To address these issues, the re-organisation of GSG has become imperative. I have therefore, decided to set up a “Special GSG re-organisation committee to study all issues concerning the organisation and propose a re-organisation structure that will allow us position for 2015.”
Alkali said the committee will list its terms of reference to include, re-examination, restructuring of the organisation to ensure its effectiveness.
In his acceptance speech, General Ahmed promised that the panel would abide by the terms of reference given it.
“We accept this with all sense of humility and responsibility and shall do our best.”
Meanwhile, erstwhile Minister of State for Defence, Olusola Obada has called on Osun State Governor, Rauf Aregbesola to call his All Progressives Congress (APC) faithful to order. She urged the governor to immediately stop them from unleashing mayhem on the state.
Responding to questions from journalists at the investiture of Mass Movement for Goodluck 2015 (MMG), the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain said South-West leaders were ready to ensure that Jonathan secured the needed votes in 2015 presidential election.
She said the new group would go into every nook and cranny of the country to sensitise the people on the ongoing transformation programmes of the present administration in the areas of agriculture, aviation, road development, the health sector, among
others.
On some party differences in Osun as well as the PDP’s performance
during last Saturday’s governorship election, she said more aggrieved members were being wooed to reconcile everyone.
“A lot of moves were made to reconcile aggrieved persons in the state
chapter of the PDP and bring them back to the party but it went the way it
did. We had a very good show despite the fact that the present governor
is an incumbent, a level playing ground was created and Osun people came
out en masse to vote.
“A lot of propaganda is going on by the party that won. I won my ward very
convincingly but they are saying that I had only three votes in my
polling booth. It is not good for our democracy,” Obada said.
Also speaking, the Director General of the MMG, Kenneth Ibe Kalu said: “Our democracy is still nascent. We need to guard our utterances and ensure that we do not endanger the democratic process. Osun election is an indication that President Jonathan believes in the rule of law and that the electoral reform is working.”
