Beware of selfish ambition – Senators

As the All Progressive Congress was registered on Wednesday, some senators, belonging to the merging parties, cautioned against the promotion of selfish ambitions.
Speaking to our correspondent on the telephone on Wednesday, Senator Olufemi Lanlehin, said it was now time for the new party to show that it was the preferred alternative in the country’s political space.
According to him, it is expected that there would be problems, but making sacrifices is the only way to establishing the foundation of the new party.
He said, “There must be sacrifices on all sides; that is the only way the party can go together. We must be ready to sacrifice personal ambitions and hold the interest of the country as paramount.”
Lanlehin, who represents Oyo South in the Senate, also said the registration of APC was inevitable because the country needed another strong party on which Nigerians could express themselves and actualise their goals for the country.”
Senator Bukar Ibrahim of the ANPP, expressed his delight with the registration of APC, but was quick to add that the party leaders should set aside their ambitions and work to wrest power from the ruling party.
He said, “The leaders of the party should now come together and unite to take power from the conservatives.
“This is the first time we are having the progressives coming together this way and I believe that we are prepared to overcome the problems that will come our way by the grace of God.”
Similar, Senator Ehigie Uzamere, on his part, said it was novel for different parties, representing different shades of interests, to come together to form a political party, which is different from an alliance.
He said, “We believe that personal ambition should be dropped for the interest of the party. That is the only way we can have a very strong party.
“We also hope that elections into the various positions in the party will not destroy the party.”
He, however, added that the registration of the party would strengthen democracy and move the country forward.
