Jam Master Jay To Be Honored In Milwaukee For Second Annual ‘JMJ Back 2 School Giveway’

It’s been more than a decade since the world lost one of the greatest hip-hop pioneers to ever grace music, Jam Master Jay. A quintessential piece to the super-group Run-DMC, Jay, real name Jason Mizell, was shot and killed on October 30, 2002. 11 years later, the legendary DJ’s murder still remains unsolved and shrouded in mystery due to the lack of cooperation by witnesses. “We still miss him terribly, but we keep it positive and try to live our lives the way he lived his- by helping others,” says close friend Eric “Shake” James. Shake was one of JMJ’s closest friends up until the hip-hop legend was killed in a recording studio. Through the years, Shake has been keeping Jam Master Jay’s spirit alive and honoring his memory through his annual “JMJ Back 2 School Giveaway.” Now in its second year, the 2nd Annual JMJ Back 2 School Giveaway will be held on Thursday, August 15th from 12-4pm at Three Stripes Barber & Beauty located at 1935 West Hampton in Milwaukee. Shake will be giving away school supplies that his shop (Three Stripes Barber & Beauty) has purchased along with free haircuts and food to kids from the community as well as free Adidas. “With this event we work to do something good for my community in Jay’s name. Last year was our first event. We were able to distribute 50 free book bags to kids. This year we’ll be giving out 100 book bags, 100 Adidas sneakers, Adidas socks and Adidas snapbacks. The book bags will be filled with school supplies, pencils, papers, folders, crayons, rulers, glue and calculators. Adidas has been a big supporter. With the Adidas Unite All Originals campaign, they let me design a limited edition Jam Master Jay Back 2 School tee that we will also give out at the event. My shop will also be giving the kids free haircuts. It will be a fun community event.” Jam Master Jay’s bandmate Darryl “DMC” McDaniels will also be on hand to sign autographs and take pictures. Mayor Barrett and Alderman Willie Wade are both also expected to attend. Adidas was one of the first to sponsor Run-DMC and has continued to support the group and JMJ’s legacy through various campaigns and donations to the JMJ Foundation. Adidas is asking that people attending JMJ Back 2 School Giveaway (and fans of Jam Master Jay’s from across the world who are not able to attend) take part in the event by tweeting #unitealloriginals #rundmc when it takes place August 15.
