As
part of efforts to make the Governor’s Cup Lagos Tennis Championship
bigger and better, organisers of the annual event have included
wheelchair tennis and a junior clinic in this year’s edition scheduled
to hold from October 13 to 27 at the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club, Onikan.
“We are featuring in this year’s
edition, a wheelchair tournament and a junior clinic for players in two
categories: U-10 and U-14.,” said Tournament Director, Wale Oladunjoye.
He added that coaches would be selected
by the Technical Committee of the LOC to teach the kids the rudiments of
the game, saying that due to limited spaces, only 300 children would
attend the clinic in the U-10 and U-14 categories.
“Logistics for the two events have been
put in place by the Nigeria Tennis Federation for the wheelchair tennis
event, which will be played from the Round of 16. The LOC will give
youngsters in the clinic mini rackets and other kits. They would be
monitored by coaches,” Oladunjoye, a Principal Special Assistant on
Grassroots Sports Development to the Lagos State Governor, said.
This year’s championship is sponsored by
Etisalat Nigeria, FCMB Plc, LASACO Assurance Plc, CCECC Limited, PLYCON
Limited and some other companies and individuals.
