President of the Association of
Industrial Security and Safety Operators of Nigeria, Dr. Ona Ekhomu,
says the Kano State bomb attacks have shown that the Boko Haram threat
is growing, urging Nigerians to step up vigilance in order to prevent
future terrorist attacks.
The security expert, in a statement on
Wednesday, added that citizens must stop denying the reality of
terrorism, while state governments should develop initiatives to fight
the scourge.
He said, “The bombings of New Road and
Enugu Road in Sabon Gari on July 29 has shown that the Boko Haram threat
is still grave and a clear and present danger.
“The displacement theory of crime
postulates that strong enforcement measures in one area will force
criminals to migrate elsewhere. So, with the emergency rule in the
North East, which has been quite effective, the terrorists have
migrated elsewhere.”
Ekhomu insisted that the reality of
terrorism could no longer be denied; adding that the 45 lives lost in
the Kano bombings could have been saved if the authorities and other
Nigerians were not in denial.
He advised state governments to urgently
develop a program that could be called, State Improvised Explosive
Device Prevention Initiative.
He said, “This will be a state-wide
improvised explosive device awareness and consciousness program that
would teach Nigerians about terrorist attacks pre-incident indicators
and thereby enroll citizens in the fight against terrorism.”
He explained that since improvised
explosive devices attacks had become prevalent, security agencies should
concentrate on rapid response to calls for service, while the State
Improvised Explosive Device Prevention Initiative volunteers would help
to detect potential bombers and contact the authorities for rapid
response.
